The Lead Fisheries Biologist, under the direction of the Executive Director, oversees a biological-based program necessary for the proper management and regulation of the Tribe's Fisheries and Aquatic ecosystem harvesting opportunities in the 1836 treaty area of Michigan.                                        

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

  • Planning and development.                                                                                 
  • Direction and supervision of department staff.                                                                           
  • Develop, review, and update department policies and procedures.                                
  • Grant acquisition and administration.                                                                              
  • Financial administration, budget review, budget development and monitoring.                        
  • Program compliance.                                                                                
  • Reporting to funding agencies, Tribal, Federal, State, and local agencies and government.      
  • Performs fisheries research and assessment activities.                                                                 

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:(includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

  • Serves as biological advisor to the Tribal Government on fisheries management matters.
  • Takes lead role in scoping interests and priorities of Tribe members for their use of fisheries resources and integrates these into management plans and strategies.
  • All other job related duties as assigned.

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives, Sault Tribe Board of Directors, customers, outside vendor/service providers, State, Federal, and other Tribal Natural Resource Management Agencies.       

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Position heaving with lifting of 100 pounds maximum with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, driving, ending; frequent carrying/lifting, reaching, manual handling, use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception field of vision and occasional sitting, pushing/pulling, climbing, crawling, use of smell, color vision and typing. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather; frequent exposure to extreme heat/cold and wet/humidity and occasional exposure to noise, vibration and air quality.  Potential hazards include frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, infectious exposure, needles and syringes, equipment and occasional exposure to electric shock, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides and computer use.  Protection equipment/clothing needed to perform job include sanitary gloves, safety glasses, cold weather outer wear and other PPE needed to perform functions of position.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education: Master's Degree in Fish Biology, Fish Ecology or Fisheries Management required.       

 

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of Fisheries Management experience required; 5 years preferred.

 

Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of grant administration, documentation, and reporting required. Strong understanding of Great Lakes Fish communities and their management required.    Working knowledge of fisheries assessment techniques required. Knowledge of statistical analysis of fisheries data sets required. Knowledge of fish handling techniques required. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) required. Supervisory skills and experience required. Financial administration and management skills required. Advanced leadership and team building skills required. Grant development and management skills required. Organizational skills required. Strategic planning, project management and governmental administration skills required.   Written and verbal communication and public speaking skills required. Must be able to identify research needs and develop data collection and analysis plans. At times work extended hours outdoors in inclement weather, work on a boat, and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in the backcountry based on business needs.  Must be able to handle pressure in meetings with public and other management agencies. Must have dispute resolution skills and ability to maintain self-discipline and objectivity. Must be able to maintain tact and diplomacy under duress. Must be able to handle, resolve and direct multiple department issues and projects with composure. Must be willing to and able to work in a changing dynamic environment. Native American preferred.
