The Laborer, under the direction of the Lead Carpenter, is responsible for assisting skilled craft workers to complete construction projects by performing the following duties; working under supervision of Carpenter and/or Project Manager. The position is also responsible for performing manual labor and operating light hand and power tools for a variety of construction, maintenance and related tasks.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)


  • Performs cleaning up of job sites, cleaning of debris, cleaning of tools, and maintaining and upkeep of job trailers.
  • Assists Lead Carpenter(s) and/or Carpenter(s) in performance of the day-to-day operations on construction jobs.
  • Responsible for driving to pick up materials, tools and other items from various worksites and/or vendors.

  • All other job related duties as assigned.




Immediate peers, immediate supervisor/manager and vendors.




Position lifts objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical Factors include constant standing, walking, carrying/lifting/pushing/pulling of 100 plus pounds, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, hearing, smelling, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color vision, field of vision and bending; frequent driving and occasional sitting.  Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, noise and vibration; frequent air quality; and occasional extreme heat/cold and wet/humidity.  Potential hazards include frequent exposure to power tools and occasional exposure to electric shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides and infectious exposure. Protective equipment and clothing needed to perform the job includes steel toe boots, safety glasses and hard hats. Tvek suits, disposable boots, dust masks, and full air respirators must be used when working on projects that may present a hazard of infectious exposure. 




Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.


Experience: Two years construction experience preferred.


Certification/License: Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check to determine suitability for work on certain projects. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be able to read and comprehend simple instructions. Must be able to perform tasks as assigned.  Must be able to perform heavy manual work in all types of outside weather conditions. Must be able to follow job-related instructions. Native American preferred.


REMUNERATION:                        $18.66 per hour
