The Heavy Equipment Repairer, under the direction of the Project Manager, is responsible for diagnosing, testing, repairing and replacing defective or worn parts and/or components on heavy equipment; backhoes, dozers, dump trucks, excavators, loaders, semi's, pick-up trucks and riding lawn mowers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
• Maintains vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair logs.
• Replaces seals and shaft sealing rings, horns, wiring harnesses, starting switches, ignition distributors, sensors, fuel pumps, and water pumps.
• Cleans or replaces filters, battery cables, engine components, and injector nozzles.
• Completes overhaul and repair of major systems, such as engines, transmissions, drive lines, and hydraulic utility systems.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
• Prioritizes work activities.
• All other job related duties as assigned.

Position lifts objects over 100 pounds with team or dual lifting and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 50 pounds. Physical Factors include constant standing, walking, carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling of 100 pounds plus, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, hearing, smelling, near, midrange, far vision, depth perception, color vision, field of vision, driving, bending and occasional sitting. Working conditions include constant exposure to weather, noise and vibration; frequent air quality; and occasional extreme heat, cold and wet/humidity. Tasks may be conducted during periods of inclement weather including extreme cold/heat and humidity. Potential hazards include constant exposure to moving mechanical parts, frequent exposure to equipment; occasional electrical shock, high exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides and infectious exposure. Protective equipment and clothing needed to perform the job includes steel toe boots, safety glasses and hard hats. Tvek suits, disposable boots, dust masks, and full air respirators must be used when working on projects that may present a hazard of infectious exposure.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Two years of experience heavy equipment repair required. Two years of experience operating heavy equipment backhoes, loaders, dozers, excavators and dump trucks preferred.
Certification/License: Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check to determine suitability for work on certain projects. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have knowledge of various techniques for removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning and installing a variety of parts, components and accessories for heavy equipment, vehicles and/or grounds maintenance equipment. Must have knowledge of how and when parts need cleaning, adjusting or replacing. Must have basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theories. Must be able to use basic tools common to occupation; wrenches, sockets, torque wrenches, brake tools and screwdrivers and a variety of test and measurement devices-feeder gauges, circuit testers, micrometers, and dial indicators. Position required being available for emergency calls on rare occasions. Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision. Native American preferred.
