Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Staff Attorney represents the interests of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and is responsible for providing legal services to the Tribe's operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
• Provides day-to-day legal advice to tribal officials and team members.
• Researches and prepares legal documents and opinions.
• Represents Sault Tribe in meetings and negotiations.
• Appears in Tribal, State, and Federal court and before Legislative bodies.
• Monitors legislation and legal proceedings that may affect the interests of the Sault Tribe.
• Attends continuing legal education training.
• Assists with draft amendments to Tribal Code.
• Consults with and keeps the General Counsel apprised of important issues.

ADDITIONAL REPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
• All other job related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers, Executives, Board of Directors, outside vendors/service providers, children and families and outside attorneys and various experts.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is light with lifting of 20 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision; frequent sitting and occasional standing, walking, carrying/lifting/pushing and pulling, stooping, reaching, manual handling and use of color/field of vision, driving, typing and bending. Working conditions include occasional exposure to extreme heat. Potential hazards include frequent computer use, occasional client contact and equipment use.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Graduate with J.D. from accredited law school required.
Certification/License: License to practice law and seek admission to the Michigan Bar. Must be admitted to or eligible for immediate admission to Tribal Court. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass background check. Must maintain good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have knowledge of Federal Indian law. Must be able to travel. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers and the general public. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate clearly in person, in writing, and by telephone and email. Must be able to work in a high stress environment and handle difficult situations. Must have organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize and manage work load to meet goals in a timely manner. Must be able to prepare clear, concise, thorough, meaningful, and grammatically correct written reports, letters, memoranda, policy and procedural drafts, and other written documents. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
