POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Library Aide, under the direction of the Repatriation & Historic Preservation, is responsible for being the initial point of contact for the Ojibwe Learning Center and Library (OLCL) and maintaining the OLCL for safe utilization by the public. The position is responsible for performing routine and daily janitorial duties, and housekeeping, as needed for the Ojibwe Learning Center & Library.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

  • Communicates with customers regarding library resources, via phone calls, emails, and face-to-face contacts. 
  • Provides instruction on how to utilize the reference sources, library catalog, and information systems.
  • Identifies customer needs and offers solutions.                                                                          
  • Maintains the print and digital collections of the Ojibwe Learning Center and Library.
  • Monitors security threats following emergency/building protocols.
  • Performs inventories and organizes items in the Ojibwe Learning Center and Library.
  • Maintains records on utilization, inventory and supplies.
  • Performs routine cleaning and general upkeep within the Ojibwe Learning Center & Library
  • Regularly attends webinars, trainings, and other library related opportunities for continue learning and best practices.  
  • Assists in monitoring compliance with grant requirements.                                                        

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

 

  • Represents Sault Tribe at local or regional meetings regarding library and potential collaborations.      
  • All other job related duties as assigned.

 

CONTACTS:           

 

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other Departments, executives, Board of Directors, outside vendor/service providers, general public and Tribal members.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Medium with lifting of 50 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing; frequent standing, walking, sitting, pushing/pulling, reaching, manual handling, use of near vision, typing, bending; occasional stooping and use of midrange/far vision and field of vision. Potential hazards include constant computer use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, infectious exposure, client contact, equipment use and travel.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education:     High School diploma or equivalent required.

 

Experience: One year of office experience preferred.

 

Certification/License: Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of Anishinaabe Bimaadiziwin preferred. Basic library knowledge preferred. Knowledge of or ability to learn to use word processing and spreadsheet and data base software required. Must be able to maintain and generate records and reports. Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings.    Must be able to work extended hours when needed.  Must have excellent public relation/customer service skills and be able to exhibit a friendly and positive attitude. Must be flexible and available to work various shifts, including nights and weekends. Native American preferred.
