The Public Works Technician, under the supervision of the Construction Manager, is responsible for performing a variety of day-to-day duties of the public works department including snow removal, grounds keeping, pump house maintenance, sampling of potable and waste water, minor vehicle maintenance and special projects for all Housing properties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Operates lawn equipment to perform grounds work; raking, grass cutting, weed whipping, tree removal, fence repair and site preparation.
  • Operates vehicle and heavy equipment to remove snow and ice from walkways, driveways, parking lots, roofs, and spreads sand and salt.
  • Operates vehicle and trailer to remove trash from vacant and occupied homes, curbsides, streets and yards.
  • Performs inspections housing site grounds including playgrounds, driveways, vacant lots, roads and sidewalks to determine problems and need for repairs, and provide feedback to supervisor.
  • Assists in underground repairs including digging, spreading and leveling dirt, locating cleanouts, gate valves and other underground piping as need to make repairs and replacements.
  • Perform the duties required in an approved preventative maintenance plan for all heavy equipment, lawn care equipment, and snow removal equipment.
  • Maintains company vehicle, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items are in safe operating condition.
  • Responsible for executing preventative maintenance plan and schedule for minor maintenance and cleaning of company vehicles.
  • Transports various items, tools and materials to job sites.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • On-call 24 hours per day, 183 (+) days per year, to address after hours and emergencies in the pump houses and for snow removal.
  • Completes the routine (daily, weekly, monthly and annually) scheduled activities of the community water systems as outlined by Indian Health Service, including meter readings, record of daily cycles, test chemicals in the water, pump house maintenance, maintain hydrants, daily security checks and other duties required to maintain a safe community water system.
  • Completes special projects on all housing sites as needed.
  • All other job related duties as assigned.


Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, customers, outside vendors and service providers and residents.


Position requires lifting of 50 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision; frequent standing, bending, walking and occasional sitting, carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, stooping, climbing, kneeling, smelling, crawling, reaching, manual handling, color/field of vision,  typing and driving. Working conditions include frequent exposure to weather, extreme heat, extreme cold, wet/humid and noise with occasional exposure to vibration, air quality, travel and flight. Potential hazards include occasional moving mechanical parts, computers, electric shock, high/exposed places, chemicals, insecticides/pesticides, infectious exposure, needles/syringes and encounters with animals. Personal protective equipment needed to perform the job are hard hat, safety glasses, protective footwear and all other safety equipment as needed to perform job duties.


Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Minimum of 2years of experience in lawn care, snow removal and/or public works, water system maintenance required.  Three years of experience in operating commercial lawn care and snow removal equipment required.

Certification/License: Must have a chauffeur's license or be able to obtain one within the first 30 days of employment.  Must obtain State Class D4 and S4 Water Certifications within 24 months of hire. Certification in loader and lift operations preferred. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have working knowledge on operating a truck with a plow.  Must have working knowledge on operating commercial grade, zero radius lawn tractors.  Must have knowledge and experience on towing a trailer with equipment.  Experience operating a skid steer preferred. Must have the ability to read and comprehend as-builds for utilities. Ability to read blue prints preferred. Must have the knowledge and experience in operating and maintaining commercial lawn equipment.  Must be able to operate a variety of gas powered equipment used in lawn care and grounds keeping (mowers, weed whips, chain saws, etc.).  Must have the skills required to repair, identify repairs, install and maintain a variety of grounds keeping equipment.  Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision in the field. Must be able to read and write and comprehend instruction and manuals on tools and equipment. Basic computer knowledge and Microsoft Office software programs preferred.  Ability to learn and use Fleet and Utility Authority management software.  Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends. Will be required to supply a variety of hand tools to perform the duties of the position. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
