The Accounts Receivable Clerk, under the direction of the Senior Accountant, is responsible for maintaining accurate account ledgers and a variety of accounting tasks, including bookkeeping, clerical and filing functions for the Sault Tribe Housing Authority and Utility Authority. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Accepts, applies payments and issues receipts for the Housing and Utility Authority.  
  • Processes daily deposits and verifies accuracy of financial transaction.
  • Creates cash receipts for posting to accounting software and forwards to supervisor for review.
  • Performs bookkeeping work, including posting data and keeping other records for tenant accounts.
  • Maintains accurate records of all transactions and tenant accounts receivable files.
  • Generates monthly billings for the Utility Authority, including preparing shut-off notices and physical shut-off list.
  • Accepts and monitors payment arrangements for the Utility Authority.
  • Processes and posts adjustments, maintenance charges, court fees and late fees in tenant accounts.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Assists with Receptionist functions and greets the general public and directs clients to appropriate staff as needed.
  • Answers the main phone line and routes calls to appropriate staff.
  • Receives tenant service calls and issues work orders.                 
  • Performs functions of Accounts Payable Clerk as back-up.                                           
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

Position sedentary primarily sitting/lifting a maximum of 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant sitting, use of near vision, typing; frequent use of hearing, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision, bending; occasional standing, walking, carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, manual handling and use of smell. Working conditions include frequent exposure to noise, vibration, air quality; occasional exposure to weather, extreme heat/cold and wet/humidity. Potential hazards include constant client contact, computer use; frequent equipment use, occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, cleaning chemicals and insecticides/pesticides.


Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years accounting or bookkeeping experience required.

Certification/License: Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have working knowledge and be able to use word processing software. Must have knowledge of spreadsheet, data base, accounting, property management and utility software. Must have working knowledge and be able to use office machines, such as calculator, copier, fax, printer and computer. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must have excellent organization skills; organizing work, prioritizing tasks and managing time. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers and the general public. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must be able handles stressful situations. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor personnel, coworkers and the general public. Must have accurate and precise records management skills. Must have excellent public relation/customer service skills and be able to exhibit friendly and positive attitude and establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and guests. Must maintain confidentiality. Native American preferred.
