The Certified Medical Assistant II (CMA) under the direction of the Clinic Nurse Supervisor, Physician Supervisor, and Clinic Manager, is responsible for providing outpatient ambulatory nursing services to eligible individuals and promoting continuity of care. The position is responsible for the coordination of services, patient education and preventative health maintenance services to clinic patients. This position is responsible for providing patient care within the scope of practice.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Receives patients, obtains chief complaints, reviews medical history prior to exam and updates as appropriate.
- As directed and supervised by healthcare professional, collects and records a variety of routine patients data as part of the check in procedures including but not limited to: height, weight, temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respirations
- Identifies and reports unusual findings or observations, clinical symptoms, behaviors and treatment reactions to appropriate healthcare professionals.
- Prepares exam room for procedures, organizes instruments and equipment; assists healthcare provider during outpatient surgical procedures, applies/removes dressings
- Cleans and disinfects exam room and fixtures by removing soiled materials/instruments, replacing exam paper sheets and wiping counter areas to provide for efficient room turns.
- Administers immunizations
- Patient triage
- Preparing patient for examination & assisting when needed
- Actively participates/assists during urgent care situations as directed: initiates and administers CPR as appropriate
- Refers problems beyond standards of practice to healthcare professional as appropriate
- Provide EKG
- Medical Supply inventory management for department.
- Sterilize medical instruments
- Make any normal patients call backs as directed by provider (i.e. normal labs, patient information)
- Administrative visit planning to include determination of what forms need completion (advanced directive, health history, risk-assessment tools) and give to registration.
- Assisting patients in filling out required forms
- Follows infection control protocols and procedures
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Promotes continuity of care, standardized patient education and prevention services.
- Collaborates with health care providers within and outside Health Division.
- All other job related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS:
Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, Directors, customers and outside vendors/service providers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position includes lifting a maximum of 50 pounds. Physical factors include must be able to frequently remain in a stationary position and type; occasionally being able to move inside various facilities and office settings, being able to distinguish verbal communications and exchange information, being able to distinguish, perceive, judge, and inspect, or observe details at close and far range, being able to lift, push, pull and carry items up to 25 pounds. Working conditions include occasional exposure to extreme heat/cold, wet/humidity, noise, and air quality. Working conditions include contact with the general public and as such could be exposed to potential hazards. Frequent computer use.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Completion of an Accredited Medical Assistant Program Required. One year of patient care required. Two year of patient care experience, preferred.
Certification/License: Medical Assistant Certified in the State of Michigan. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of nursing theory, skills and best practice standards required. Knowledge of tribal organizational policies, tribal services and tribal service area preferred. Knowledge of HIPPA regulations and Health Care Laws required. Knowledge of Infection Control, Safety Regulations and Health Care Accreditation required. Knowledge of boundaries, ethics, delegation and Scope of Practice required. Knowledge of clinical documentation and electronic health records systems required. Knowledge and ability to use word processing, spreadsheets and data bases software required including electronic health record charting. CPR PRO will be required within 3 months of hire date. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers and the general public. Must have excellent organization skills; organizing work, prioritizing tasks and managing time. Must be able to work with minimal to no supervision. Must maintain confidentiality. Must be able to work flexible schedule. Native American preferred.
