POSITION SUMMARY:

The Cook, under the direction of the Eldercare Services Division Director, is responsible for creating and implementing a menu, preparing menus and supervising Kitchen Aides and Volunteers at the meal site.  The position is responsible for food ordering and kitchen preparation. The position is responsible for ensuring meal site complies and follows Serve Safe Guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Supervises Kitchen Aides and Volunteers at meal site.
  • Meets with nutritionist annually to review and prepare monthly menus.
  • Monitors food expenditures and stays within budget guidelines.
  • Works with vendors to coordinate food purchases.
  • Establishes and enforces nutrition and sanitation standards.
  • Prepares food.
  • Responsible for upkeep of the kitchen and dining room.                                                                        

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Shops for groceries and maintains inventory.
  • Ensures all receipts and paperwork are processed.
  • All other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, customers and outside vendors/service providers and elders.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Position medium with lifting of 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking, use of hearing, smelling, near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, and color vision; frequent carrying large bulk food purchases, lifting and carrying food up to 50 pounds, reaching, driving and bending; and occasional sitting, pushing up to 10 pounds, stooping, kneeling and manual handling. Working conditions include frequent exposure to weather and occasional exposure to extreme heat and cold, wet/humid and noise. Potential hazards include constant client contact and equipment such as stove, steam table, oven and other kitchen equipment. Protective equipment/clothing needed to perform job includes eye goggles when deep cleaning using chemicals and hazard kits to include personal protection devices such as masks, gloves, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. 

Experience: Minimum of one-year cooking experience required.

Certification/License: Serve Safe Certificate required within 3 months of hire, training will be provided. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing.  Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate clearly in person, in writing, and by telephone and email. Must have excellent public relation/customer services skills and be able to exhibit friendly and positive attitude and establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates and guests.  Must have basic math skills. Must maintain confidentiality.  Native American preferred.
