POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Chief Optometrist, the Optician I will assist in organizing the optical dispensary.  This includes, but is not limited to, front desk procedures, patient scheduling, frame/lens selection, fitting and ordering, communicating individual orders to the lab, assisting patients with frame/lens selection, verifying, dispensing, and repairing spectacles using knowledge of both physical and ophthalmic optics. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Front desk procedures.
  • Patient scheduling.
  • Frame/lens selection, fitting, and ordering.
  • Ophthalmic optics, verifying, dispensing, and repairs.
  • Stocking of frames from suppliers.
  • Communicating individual orders to the optical lab.
  • Pre-testing patients using ophthalmic instruments including, but not limited to, auto kerato-refractometers and non-contact tonometers. 
  • Ordering and stocking trial contact lenses.
  • Contact lens instruction, procedure, and education.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)

  • Coverage for other locations.
  • Insertion of eye drops.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

CONTACTS:

Immediate peers, peers in other departments, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, Board of Directors, customers, outside vendors/service providers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position is sedentary, primarily sitting/lifting a maximum of 10 pounds. Physical factors include constant use of hearing (good listening skills), near and midrange vision (computer use), color vision and typing; frequent standing, walking, and sitting; use of far vision and bending; and occasional carrying, lifting under 10 pounds and pushing, including wheelchairs, climbing, stooping, reaching, manual handling, depth perception, the field of vision and driving. Potential hazards include contact exposure to chemicals, patient and/or client contact, computer use, and equipment (medical). Protective equipment/clothing needed to perform the job, including clean scrubs and no open shoes requirement.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Three years of Paraoptometric experience preferred.

Certification/License: Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Must have a valid driver's license and be insured by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of spectacle fabrication and ophthalmic optics preferred. Knowledge of frame adjustment and repair preferred. Knowledge of contact lenses is preferred. Good listening skills are required. Must be able to prioritize responsibilities. Must be able to handle busy working conditions.  Must maintain privacy and confidentiality. Native American preferred.
